Baptism

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism celebrates someone entering a personal relationship with Christ and His family. From the perspective of the New Testament, baptism happens by immersing someone in water for ceremonial cleansing. Through baptism, we recognize that someone has died/been buried with Christ, has been washed by Christ through the forgiveness of sin, and that we are raised to new life in Christ, as adopted children in God’s family.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:1–4 (ESV)

Through being baptized, you are ultimately telling the church that you are identified with Christ and belong to His family! Your baptism allows the church to celebrate your new life in Christ.

BAPTISM AT FIRST FREE CHURCH | YOUR NEXT STEPS

STEP 1: SIGN-UP TO BE BAPTIZED

After you have prayerfully decided you are ready to take this important step, the next thing to do is to fill out this form.

The staff will get you registered for a future baptism service on select dates during the year. Before your baptism date, you will be asked to tell your story to a church staff member.

Let us know if there is a church staff member, Elder, believing family member, or believing ministry leader/mentor that you’d like to baptize you.

As you prepare to be baptized, make sure you tell your family and friends to come to church on the day of your baptism! It’s a great way for others to hear about God’s incredible work in your life.

STEP 2: TELL US YOUR STORY

At First Free Church, our practice is to have the person seeking baptism meet with a church staff member or Elder of the church. (Don’t be intimidated by this step!) At that time, you’ll be asked several basic questions:

  • Can you tell me about how you came to faith in Jesus Christ? When and how did you become a follower of Jesus? We call this your testimony.
  • What is baptism and why is it important?
  • Why do you want to be baptized now?

So that we can share your story with the church family when you are baptized, you will be asked to either write/type out your testimony for someone to read during your baptism, or we will make a video. Sharing your story publicly allows the whole body of Christ to celebrate your new life with Jesus!

STEP 3: GET BAPTIZED

We will confirm the date of your baptism, along with the service times of your baptism. On the day of your baptism, you’ll come early before the service, and meet briefly with someone who will give you instructions.

During the baptism service, we will share your story, talk briefly to you, and then baptize you by immersion in our baptismal tank. Expect lots of tears of joy and cheers of great celebration!

Praise the Lord for your new life in Christ! Praise God for a family that is happy to hear about your faith!
